What Makes Eco-Fascists Tick (Like Time Bombs)?

May 5th, 2007

As we have chronicled profusely on this blog, agents and functionaries of the Federal Government are engaged in a variety of sociopathic behaviors, so many that there appears to be a war being waged by the Federal Government against the residents of the rural American West.

The behaviors include:

• The wholesale and deliberate destruction of heritage forests (and other heritage vegetation types) by catastrophic mega-fires

• The deliberate visitation of catastrophic fire upon private properties and residencies

• The wholesale and deliberate destruction of wildlife populations and entire species, by a variety of means

• The deliberate visitation of blood-thirsty predators upon private property and residents

• The usurpation and occupation of private property, by a variety of means

• The deliberate destruction of rural economies, by a variety of means

• The deliberate destruction of local rural governments and social infrastructures, by a variety of means.

The War on the West has a long and bloody history, rising and falling periodically over the last five centuries. The war has been revived in the last 40 years, and during this era, in each specific case, the sociopathic and war-like behaviors of the Feds are justified, blamed, credited, or otherwise related to a kind of fascist pseudo-environmentalism that we have called Eco-Nazism, but now, in our new moderated tone, we call eco-Fascism.

There is a big difference between good stewardship of the land and Eco-Fascism: they are opposites. Eco-Fascism destroys environments; eco-Fascists are toxic to Nature and Humanity alike.

To be fair, not all the employees of the various Federal land management agencies are card-carrying eco-Fascists. Many resist the terrible orders. Many comply with deep reservations and subsequent regrets. But enough Federal employees at all levels comply willingly and enthusiastically, and so their agencies have been successful at wreaking tremendous damage to land and people over recent decades.

The Universal Soldier really is to blame, and the soldiers who are waging this war are Federal employees. Not all of them willingly, but enough are complicit.

This is fairly obvious to the victims of the War on the West. What troubles (some of) us (sometimes) is why. Why is this war being waged on us? What did we do to deserve such treatment? What motivates eco-Fascists to commit such grievous harm to complete strangers, attacking our landscapes, properties, livelihoods, and lives?

What makes eco-Fascists tick, like time bombs?

Many pundits have offered a variety of theories to “explain” why agents and functionaries of the Federal Government have perpetrated such a campaign of atrocities against American citizens all in the name of The Environment. In this essay we discuss some of these conjectured motivations, specifically:

• Money

• Power

• Legality

• Science

• Religion

• Ignorance

• Love (of Nature)

• Malice (towards Humanity)

• Fear (of both)

This is a large undertaking, and we cannot do the entire subject justice in a blog essay, but we do layout below the basic arguments, pro and con, for each listed theory. If the subject interests you, we invite your comments, especially those that fill in the details and give examples.

Money

The reason that employees of the Federal Government are waging an “environmental” war on residents of the rural American West is … that they make money doing it.

Pro:  There are huge amounts of money changing hands in the Environmental Movement. The Nature Conservancy alone has an annual income over a billion dollars and assets worth 4 or 5 times that much. Eco-Fascist executive salaries run over a million dollars a year, and their top attorney’s make that much or more.

Most of the eco-Fascist money comes from the Government and large Foundations, i.e. from taxpayers and consumers. The river of cash flow is diverted by politicians and eco-Fascist fat cats into their own bank accounts. (Look at Al Gore. He doesn’t exactly live like Gandhi).

Everybody wants in on the take, Fed employees included, and that’s what drives their boat.

Con:  Very little eco-Fascist money trickles down the field level of Federal employment. The revolving door to eco-Fascist boardrooms is open only to the top bureaucrats (Cabinet-level and above, and/or Senators). At most levels of public employment, it all pays the same. The typical incentive is to work less and get away with it.

Advancement and/or grant funding may require toeing the eco-Fascist party line, but the personal financial rewards from doing that are marginal and insignificant compared to the million-dollar-a-year eco-Fascist fund brokers.

Most Federal employees do not benefit financially from mega-forest-fires or wolf packs. They may believe their jobs depend on burning down America’s forests and unleashing blood-thirsty predators in citizens’ yards, but there are no secret kickbacks or bribes for doing so at most Civil Service levels, to my knowledge.

Power

The reason that employees of the Federal Government are waging an “environmental” war on residents of the rural American West is … that they gain personal power and influence doing so.

Pro:  Power and money track together. Power is money, and vice versa. The more money you have, the more power you have. It is difficult to separate the two. The vast billions changing hands are directed to various pockets by eco-Fascist power brokers. The profiteers and the power brokers are the same people.

Much of the money (that isn’t diverted directly to Al and his cronies) goes to political campaigns and propaganda pushes, as well as lobbying and legal fees. Those are methods of buying power.

Federal employees may not get paid much, but they can garner influence and power. You go along to get along, and a lust for political power is the reason.

Con:  The same contrary argument applies to power as to money. Very little political power ever sinks to the field level. Very few eventual power brokers arise through the ranks of the Civil Service. There are some petty tyrants in some outlying offices, but they never really hold any real reins by themselves.

The typical incentive is to shirk as much responsibility as possible and get away with it.

Federal employees who allow preventable or controllable wildfires to incinerate old-growth forests, or who “set free” human-habituated predators in rural communities, do not become the eco-Fascist generals of the future. The practice of falling on one’s sword is self-defeating in the long run, and does not lead to positions of power.

Legality

The reason that employees of the Federal Government are waging an “environmental” war on residents of the rural American West is … that they are merely obeying the law.

Pro:  The judge made us do it! There are a dozen Federal Environmental laws that dictate what must be done, and when, and where (why is not important). The Endangered Species Act, The Wilderness Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, etc. have complex strings attached to Federal land management agencies. In many cases individual Federal judges micro-manage local Federal offices.

Congress could fix these defective laws, but hasn’t and won’t anytime soon. Someday we might have a rational judiciary, but not foreseeably, and there’s not much hope for the distant future, either.

Con:  The Pro position is difficult to argue with. However, there are cases where Federal employees have broken laws in order to perpetrate eco-Fascist attacks.

• Benjamin Tuggle, Director of the USFWS Southwest Regional Office, is responsible for his staff’s release of 3-strike wolves in direct violation of a legal agreement Tuggle himself signed.

• Mike Williams, Supervisor of the Kaibab National Forest, allowed a whoofoo to burn in habitats where whoofoos were forbidden under a court-ordered Decision that Williams himself signed.

• The top bureaucrats in our Federal land management agencies are holding secret and illegal meetings with BINGO’s to plan regional holocausts.

Not only are these extra-legal actions not required by Federal laws, rules, and regulations; they are patently illegal under the existing set, as defective as those laws might be. Therefore it cannot be The Law, alone, that motivates eco-Fascist functionaries.

Science

The reason that employees of the Federal Government are waging an “environmental” war on residents of the rural American West is … that they are applying the best available science.

Pro:  Environmental science has progressed in great leaps since Victorian times. We now know a great deal about how the natural world works. Consensus has been reached among thousands of scientists regarding forests, wildlife, and wildfire, as well as climate change, population dynamics, carbon cycling, and many other aspects of conservation biology.

Federal employees have contributed immensely to this wonderful gain in knowledge and insight about the natural world, and are doing their unbiased best to apply the best unbiased science available to man or beast to our shared Environment.

Con: Not!!!

Modern eco-Fascist science is based on myth and outright fraud. It flip-flops and mutates in perfect correlation with political winds. Environmental science is the most backward science in Science, and has regressed, not progressed, since Victorian times.

Examples of junk science abound: site potential tree height, old-growth and spotted owls, natural fire regimes, pristine wilderness, a balance of predators, biodiversity, ecosystem management, forest health, human-induced climate change, drowning polar bears, etc. etc. etc. The list goes on and on of bogus theory, ridiculous hypothesis, and sheer mountebankery and flim-flam posing as “science.”

Science is the search for the physical truth. That is something completely at cross-purposes with eco-Fascist means and ends.

Some Federal employees may believe that the flim-flam is science. If they do, they are fooled. But in that case the motivation for the horrendous Federal actions is ignorance, not science, and so belongs in a different category in the framework of this essay. Namely, the Ignorance Excuse (see below).

Religion

The reason that employees of the Federal Government are waging an “environmental” war on residents of the rural American West is … that they are following the teachings of their eco-Religion.

Pro:  The Eco-Fascist Movement is almost like a religion. They have high priests that transmit doctrine and dogma to the fanatical faithful, who in turn do not question the divine messages, since they are divine. Eco-Fascists practice their religion by preaching at gatherings and by inflicting penance upon others not of their religion. Non-believers are unclean, and a big problem, and so must be punished.

Religion trumps government, and so Eco-Fascist religious zealots have infiltrated government service with the intent of converting their fellow employees to the true faith. Once the eco-Church has total control, Federal agencies will act with divine guidance, too. The divine guidance of Mother Nature, that is.

Con:  Eco-Fascism is no more a religion than atheism or Communism. All the alleged parallels with real religions are metaphorical at best.

Real adherents of real religions insist that they be recognized as such, and would be insulted if you described their set of beliefs as somehow not a religion. Eco-Fascists, on the other hand, deny that their belief set is a religion and are insulted if you describe them as that.

To be completely inclusive, there are probably some self-described pagans in Federal employ, but paganism is a non-specific group of a variety of religions and is close to agnosticism in that regard, i.e. not a religion but instead a denial of religion in general. [To my knowledge there are no Satan worshipers in Federal land management agencies, but how would I know?]

Burning forests, ranches, and homes and dumping predators in the area for good measure are not sacramental acts in any religion. While it may appear some Federal agents are behaving like eco-religious fanatics, it’s all a pseudo-liturgical charade.

Ignorance

The reason that employees of the Federal Government are waging an “environmental” war on residents of the rural American West is … that they are ignorant.

Pro:  The Ignorance Quotient is huge in the Federal Civil Service. We are not talking the best and brightest of the greatest generation here, sports fans. Federal employees are ignorant of the money, power, legalities, science, and eco-religion, if any, that may partially impinge on their individual Cones of Blindness.

In particular, they are ignorant of the effects of their actions. They do not understand how horrible it is to be on the receiving end of their ignorance. They do not understand what it feels like to have your special forest burned down, so rudely and unnecessarily. They do not understand what it feels to fear for your child’s life while she waits at the road for the school bus, and you watch for predators with rifle at the ready. They do not understand what feels like to lose your livelihood, your property, or your home.

If they did understand these things, if they weren’t so blasted ignorant, then they would never commit the terrible acts that they do.

Con:  They are not ignorant. They do understand all these things. Ignorance is no excuse because everybody involved knows what’s going on.

Love (of Nature)

The reason that employees of the Federal Government are waging an “environmental” war on residents of the rural American West is … that they love nature and wildlife and seek to protect and preserve the objects of their affection for future generations.

Pro:  The affection for Nature and wild things rises naturally in the human heart. We all seek to care for God’s (or the Goddess’s) creation. Flowers, birds, bunnies, deer, wolves, people; we are all together in this world, and it is beautiful. Federal employees are doing their best to be good stewards, and it comes from the heart. Lord knows they aren’t getting rich behind it.

Con:  We do not mean to scoff at love. Love is the best reason to do anything. But whether “love” is the real motive behind Federal actions is a worthy question.

Federal agents mist-net birds, trap mammals, and handle, drug, and tag wildlife in projects that yield no useful scientific information but do torture and kill animals. Mega-fires also choke, burn, and kill wildlife as well as destroying habitats.

Examples abound, but are perhaps little known. Hawaiian T&E birds have suffered some of the most brutal nest robbing, mist-netting, capture-and-cage, disease breeding mishandling of any wildlife in America. The USGS BRD has driven species to near extinction with “love” (the alala or Hawaiian crow and the palila, a honeycreeper).

Marine mammal counts off Oregon’s coast involve boats and the netting, landing, and ear-tagging of seals and sea lions. The drowning, slashing, roars of pain and terror, and spraying blood everywhere punctuate some of the most horrific wildlife “love-ins” ever witnessed. Rodeos are dainty tea parties in comparison.

Federal agents do not love catastrophic forest fires, or blood-thirsty wolves, or much of anything that crawls, swims, runs, or flies. That’s a con, an excuse to cover up the real excuse, one that their actions belie louder than words ever could.

Malice (towards Humanity)

The reason that employees of the Federal Government are waging an “environmental” war on residents of the rural American West is … that they bear ill-will and malice towards their fellow human beings, towards most of us anyway.

Pro:  The Eco-Fascist Movement is not pro-anything; they are anti-human being. Human beings are the worst animals ever to evolve on Planet earth. We wreck everything. There are far, far too many people on Earth. Abortion, euthanasia, war, famine, disease, hurricane, flood, fire, pestilence: they’re all good if they decrease the human population.

The best landscapes are those devoid of people, where any sign of the human race has been obliterated. And that’s the job of eco-Fascists in the Federal employ, indeed the mission of our land management agencies. Extirpate the people from the land. Wildness and solitude are superior to ugly developments like homes. Homes are worse thing going, because they house yucky humans.

It’s no joke. The eco-Fascist anti-human agenda is malevolent and malicious towards human beings, and towards the environment, too, upon close inspection. All wars have a strong element of hatred in the propaganda, because hatred is a good motivator for soldiers.

If Federal employees are not on the take, nor fanatical, nor ignorant of the effects of their action on rural residents, then they must be motivated by a far too common type of general malice towards mankind.

Con:  As deluded as they might be, most human beings are not that hateful. Islamo-fascists are an exception, not the rule, and eco-Fascists are not like that. While Federal actions may seem to born of hatred because of the harm and tragedies they cause, in reality most Federal employees are nice people who like their fellow humans and seek to be kind, not malicious.

Fear (of both)

The reason that employees of the Federal Government are waging an “environmental” war on residents of the rural American West is … that they fear losing their jobs, homes, and possibly even their lives if they do not carry out the wishes of the leaders.

Pro:  The crazy programs that incinerate forests and dump predators in backyards emanate from the very tip-top of the bureaucratic pyramid. Underlings have no choice but to obey, or else they will be thrown out the door.

Life is tough, and American life is a rat race. At any moment something bad could happen: the globe could get warmer, or cooler, or the sky could catch on fire, or fall, or all the animals could die, and the birds, and the Republicans might cut down all the trees, and then Humanity itself would wither and die off, because the world has a wrench in the gears, and the sun is going to explode, and I might need an operation, or somebody in my family will, and how am I going to pay for it, and what if gas goes to $10 a gallon, and milk, too, and what about the wolves, and the children! Why won’t anybody think about the children?

Paranoia runs deep. People do what they think will result in the least pain. I’d rather let the wolves go than listen to any more talk. Just let it burn. We’ll be safer that way. There are more important things to worry about. What about so-and-so’s new haircut/boyfriend/girlfriend and will they win the TV show contest?

Federal employees are in huge denial because reality is so frightening. They do what they do because they are told to do it, and resistance is futile, dangerous, and scary.

Con:  Fear has nothing to do with it. The Feds aren’t afraid of local residents. Once you have the badge on, you are impervious to local eruptions. Ignoring local concerns is like brushy away flies. Pesky but not intimidating.

Conclusion

Those are the main reasons/excuses/explanations generally proposed when the subject of eco-Fascist motivations is discussed. We are not sure which one or two we favor, and any choice we made would waver day-to-day, anyway.

The subject came up last year when pondering the convictions and incarcerations of two young women for committing eco-terrorist firebombings.  How did two nice, suburban girls from nice families turn into arsonist felons? It might be sexist on our part, but we could see how hare-brained young men could turn into thugs. How nice young women could and did go haywire was less clear in our minds.

One friend suggested it was allure of adventure, the thrill of being a “revolutionary” and all the accoutrements of that: the clothing, sex, food, drugs, and romance (real or imagined). Perhaps he was right. Romance did not make our list, however. Maybe it fits in the Religion or Ignorance bracket.

The motivations of Federal employees waging a war on rural Westerners may not be all that important. What’s important is halting the attacks. Their root causes are superfluous in many respects.

But it might also be of some utility to Know One’s Enemy, and to be able to use that knowledge against him or her, in order to win battles and eventually the war. We have made an attempt to do that. Please feel free to add your two-cents (although if you have a nickel or a dime’s worth, we’ll probably take it).
